I’ve spent more than four decades in the trenches of business — not as a theorist, but as an operator, owner, and financial leader guiding real companies through real challenges.

 

After retiring from executive leadership in 2018, I launched a consulting practice focused on small and mid-sized businesses. Over the next seven years, I worked directly with approximately fifty companies as consulting clients — primarily in manufacturing and wholesale — and formed a 20-member SMB Advisory Council made up exclusively of business owners with 20+ employees and revenues between $2.5 million and $25 million.

 

These Advisory Council members were not clients. They were peers — operators in the field — who met regularly to pressure-test ideas, frameworks, and tools against real-world constraints.

 

Through both consulting engagements and Advisory Circle participation, I observed patterns across more than 170 small and mid-sized businesses.

 

And what I learned was simple — but decisive:
