The BusinessWiser™ Dynamic Duo
Two Executive Guides. One Powerful Perspective on Cash Flow.
One explores why stronger cash flow matters.
The other reveals where your cash-flow result actually comes from.
Together, they challenge business owners and senior executives to think differently about cash flow—not simply as a financial number, but as the result of decisions made throughout the business and the source of greater financial flexibility.
Better Decisions → Stronger Cash Flow → More Options
Cash Flow Creates Options™ + Most SMBs Don't Have a Cash Flow Problem. They Have a Decision Problem.™
TWO FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS
Two Questions Every Business Owner Should Be Able to Answer
Cash flow is often discussed as something to measure, forecast, or improve.
But before asking how to improve it, there are two more fundamental questions:
Where does the cash-flow result actually come from?
And:
Why does stronger cash flow matter?
Those questions are at the heart of the BusinessWiser™ Dynamic Duo.
One guide examines the business decisions that ultimately create your cash-flow result.
The other explores what stronger cash flow can make possible for the business and its owner.
Together, they connect decisions, cash flow, and options in a way that can change how you think about managing your business.
THE BIG IDEA
Cash Flow Doesn't Begin With Cash
It begins with decisions.
Decisions about pricing.
Growth.
Inventory.
Purchasing.
Customer terms.
Operating expenses.
Capital expenditures.
Debt.
Owner distributions.
Every day, decisions are being made throughout your business that ultimately affect cash.
Some strengthen it.
Some consume it.
Some create consequences that may not become visible for weeks or months.
That's why cash flow should not be viewed simply as an accounting result.
Cash flow is a management result.
And when those decisions consistently produce stronger cash flow, something else happens.
The business gains greater financial flexibility.
More ability to invest.
More capacity to grow.
More resilience when circumstances change.
More freedom to reduce debt.
More opportunity to build enterprise value and owner wealth.
In other words:
Cash Flow Creates Options™.
THE CONNECTION
From Decisions to Cash Flow to Options
The two Executive Guides were written to explore different sides of the same business reality.
Better Business Decisions
Pricing, growth, inventory, receivables, purchasing, expenses, capital allocation, debt, and other decisions shape the economics of the business.
↓
Stronger Cash Flow
As those decisions improve, the business has the opportunity to generate and retain more cash.
↓
More Options
Stronger cash flow can provide greater flexibility to invest, grow, reduce debt, navigate uncertainty, build value, create owner wealth, and improve quality of life.
Better Decisions → Stronger Cash Flow → More Options
That's the connection at the heart of the BusinessWiser™ Dynamic Duo.
GUIDE ONE
Cash Flow Creates Options™
Why the Ultimate Value of Cash Flow Is the Choices It Creates
The WHY of Cash Flow
The ultimate value of stronger cash flow isn't simply more money sitting in a bank account.
It's what that financial strength allows you to do next.
Cash Flow Creates Options™ explores the strategic importance of cash flow through the eyes of the business owner.
It examines how stronger cash flow can create greater flexibility to:
-
Invest in the business when opportunities arise
-
Fund growth with less financial pressure
-
Reduce dependence on debt
-
Navigate unexpected challenges
-
Strengthen enterprise value
-
Create greater owner wealth
-
Improve personal financial flexibility
-
Shape the role the business plays in your life
This isn't a technical guide to calculating cash flow.
It's about understanding why cash flow deserves a much larger role in the way owners think about business success.
Because profit matters.
Growth matters.
Value matters.
But the ability to make choices depends heavily on having the cash flow to support them.
GUIDE TWO
Most SMBs Don't Have a Cash Flow Problem. They Have a Decision Problem.™
How Better Business Decisions Create Stronger Cash Flow—and More Options
The WHERE of Cash Flow
Cash-flow problems rarely appear out of nowhere.
Today's cash position is usually the cumulative result of decisions made across the business over weeks, months, and sometimes years.
A price increase that didn't happen.
Inventory that gradually became too large.
Customers given increasingly generous payment terms.
Purchasing decisions that tied up unnecessary cash.
Operating costs that quietly expanded.
Equipment purchased too early—or delayed too long.
Growth pursued without understanding its cash requirements.
Individually, these decisions may not appear to be cash-flow decisions.
Collectively, they help determine the cash-flow result.
This Executive Guide examines the major decisions and cash-flow drivers that shape that result, including:
-
Growth
-
Pricing
-
Cost of goods sold
-
Operating expenses
-
Inventory
-
Accounts receivable
-
Accounts payable
-
Capital expenditures
-
Debt
-
Owner distributions
The objective is to change the question from:
“How do we improve cash flow?”
to:
“What decisions created the cash flow we're experiencing today?”
That question can change the conversation.
WHY READ THEM TOGETHER?
Two Guides That Complete the Story
Either guide can stand on its own.
Together, they provide a much broader perspective.
Most SMBs Don't Have a Cash Flow Problem. They Have a Decision Problem.™ takes you upstream—to the decisions that create the cash-flow result.
Cash Flow Creates Options™ takes you downstream—to what stronger cash flow can ultimately make possible.
One begins with the business.
The other ends with the choices available to the business owner.
Together:
Decisions create the cash-flow result.
Cash flow creates the options.
That's why we call them the BusinessWiser™ Dynamic Duo.
WHO THEY'RE FOR
Written for Business Owners—Not Accountants
The BusinessWiser™ Dynamic Duo was created primarily for owners, CEOs, presidents, and senior executives of owner-led product businesses, including:
Manufacturing • Wholesale & Distribution • Industrial & Commercial Products • Consumer Products
These aren't accounting textbooks.
They aren't collections of financial formulas.
And they aren't written to turn business owners into CFOs.
They're Executive Guides designed to help leaders think differently about the decisions that shape their business, their cash flow, and ultimately their choices.
A PERSPECTIVE BUILT OVER A CAREER
Why I Wrote These Guides
My perspective on cash flow wasn't developed in a classroom.
It evolved over more than four decades working across Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurial businesses, startups, turnarounds, and owner-led small and mid-sized businesses.
One experience, in particular, changed the way I would think about cash flow for the rest of my career.
I had been CFO of a growing entrepreneurial company for just one week when I received a call late on a Sunday afternoon.
We couldn't make payroll the following Friday.
Three hundred employees.
No cash.
No remaining credit line.
We ultimately made payroll, but the experience taught me something I never forgot.
A business can appear successful on paper and still find itself constrained by cash.
Over the years that followed, another lesson became equally clear:
Cash flow doesn't exist independently of the business.
It reflects the cumulative effect of decisions made throughout it.
Those two lessons eventually became the foundation for these two Executive Guides.
Cash is reality. But Cash Flow is King.
And ultimately:
Cash Flow Creates Options™.

Change the Way You Think About Cash Flow
Most businesses measure cash flow after the decisions have already been made.
The BusinessWiser™ Dynamic Duo encourages you to look at it differently.
Look upstream at the decisions creating the result.
Then look downstream at the options stronger cash flow can create.
Better Decisions.
Stronger Cash Flow.
More Options.
